China Blasts U.S. Plans to Establish Critical Minerals Alliance

(MENAFN) China on Thursday denounced what it labeled "small-circle rules" following Washington's announcement of plans to create a preferential trade zone for critical minerals with allied nations.

China Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian emphasized that preserving an open, inclusive and mutually beneficial international trade environment serves the common interests of all nations, media reported.

"China opposes any country undermining the international economic and trade order through 'small-circle rules,'" he told reporters in Beijing.

He further stated that countries share responsibility for safeguarding the stability and security of global supply and industrial chains for critical minerals.

Lin's comments followed US Vice President J.D. Vance's Wednesday declaration that the Trump administration is pursuing the formation of a critical minerals "preferential trade zone" with partner nations.

Speaking before delegations representing over 50 countries, Vance said the United States is seeking to build consensus to form the group "to eliminate the problem of people flooding into our markets with cheap critical minerals to undercut our domestic manufacturers," likely referring to Chinese trade practices that have repeatedly been criticized by the United States and allied nations.

The initiative signals Washington's intensifying efforts to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains amid escalating economic competition between the world's two largest economies.

Beijing has consistently pushed back against multilateral frameworks it perceives as exclusive coalitions designed to contain China's economic influence globally.
