EPA Cleanup Continues at HK Porter
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently returned to H.K. Porter to continue cleanup and remediation at the former manufacturing site. Ray Tijerina, on-scene coordinator with EPA Region 5, said the agency has started additional site reassessment after demolition of the main manufacturing structure was completed last year. Initial results are expected within a few weeks. This most recent testing will determine the extent of soil removal the EPA will perform.
The expected outcome is that the EPA will remove and replace one to two feet of topsoil from roughly half of the 12-acre property. Following previous asbestos abatement, the agency’s current efforts will focus on removing lead contamination above federal thresholds for removal. The work is projected to take three months, but the duration could vary.
Air quality will be monitored surrounding the site as a safety precaution to protect nearby properties. Workers will also spray down any soil with water before it is excavated to control dust.
Automotive brake pads were manufactured at H.K. Porter for much of the site’s history using asbestos and other hazardous chemicals. While it’s too early to consider specific reuses, the City’s intent is to prepare the property for long-term redevelopment that benefits the community and surrounding neighborhoods.
